Walk the 'Plage de Goas Lagorn'

Plage de Goas Lagorn — Côtes-d’Armor (Bretagne, France)

This morning is all about the upcoming hike at lunchtime. The weather should remain stable, no rain, up to 15°C. I am delighted and am carried along by this joy throughout the morning. Then a fine drizzle, we postpone the start by an hour. It’s so fine, it could be fog. And as quickly as it has come, it is gone again.

She gets behind the wheel, I give her the coordinates of our destination. And then we set off. It’s the same route as yesterday. Except that we don’t stop in Trébeurden, but continue on to the Plage de Goas Lagorn.

The parking lot is right in front of the beach. There are only a few cars there. The sky is still cloudy, no rain. We set off from here and start by walking along the beach, then up the hill along a beautiful footpath. It is mostly firm, but in some sections we have to walk through ankle-deep mud.

Once we reach the top, we are rewarded with a wonderful view of the beach and the surrounding nature. I feel free and very happy on this part of the route. In some places, it smells so much like coconut from the gorse growing along the way that I feel like I’m in Asia.

We are getting further and further inland, the sounds of the sea fade away and the dirt tracks and muddy ground turn into paved roads. The pace increases until we turn into a narrow, heavily overgrown and very small path. This leads us into a dead end, a barricade of fallen tree trunks. Some of them are whole trees that have been ripped out of the ground along with their roots and are blocking the path.

We try anyway. We try to climb over them or walk past them, but get caught in bushes of thorny branches. Our pants don’t come out of it without damage. But neither do we. The euphoria is gone, the mood is changing. It’s a rapid change. A fall. We can’t go any further from here. Abort and turn back.

Back on the paved road, we take a detour, which leads us back to the original path after a short time. We continue through mud and up a hill until we reach a small, sleepy village. Beautiful houses on spacious plots with well-tended and flowering gardens. Some houses with open windows, others seams to left for a different season. It’s like being in paradise. Astonishing beautiful.

We cross the village and arrive at the Léguer, a wide river that flows into the sea or is filled by the sea. I can’t say for sure, because the water seems to stand still. It is impossible to tell in which direction it is flowing.

From there, we take a narrow path along the coast, past a bunker that is too smeared for us to ignore and continue on to the next bunker, where we take a break. We sit down on the rocks and look down to the open sea and the mouth of the river.

We linger here for a while until we are lured by the sound of the sea on the other side of the bunker. A wide and large golden-brown beach appears in our field of vision. Wave after wave breaks on it, enchanting this place and us. We descend and enjoy the sea. Every single moment in a place like this is not a lost moment. In fact, it is a happy one.

This beach is the highlight of this hike, which was not planned like this. We only decided to come here the day before and didn’t know what to expect. But it was worth it. Just one kilometer further on, we arrive at the large beach where our car is parked. It’s busier because it’s easier to access. But I take the other one with me in my heart.

The day ends with a glowing sunset that turns the sky pink and golden yellow. It illuminates the entire horizon. I stand at the large window and look up the hill where my car is parked at the wonderful spectacle. A glass of white wine in my hand, the happiness of the world in my heart.

Just a few moments ago, I was up there, over the hill on the road, trying to catch a little more of this magic. I could only see a section of it, the many roofs blocked my view. But back in the warm house, I was the happiest person on earth. I want to experience these moments much more often.
