Fog and Sea Air: A Trip to Meneham
The journey begins in thick fog that shrouds the landscape like a mysterious veil. But as we approach our destination, the sky starts to clear. The last few kilometers take us along a narrow, winding road that snakes through the countryside until we finally reach the parking lot by the sea.
What unfolds before our eyes resembles a painting: a white sandy beach, lined with individual rocks and striking formations. The water shimmers in an enticing turquoise-green, with a flawlessly blue sky stretching above. Sunbeams dance on the water’s surface, and the air carries a scent of fresh water – so pure and crisp that for a moment, one could feel transported to the Caribbean.
Our actual destination is Meneham, a historical gem. Between two massive rocks stands an old watchtower, deeply rooted in the history of this special place. It is just one of several buildings – all old stone houses with rugged charm that have been carefully repurposed. Here you can now find an inviting bistro, a restaurant serving local specialties, a small museum telling the story of the place, and various art galleries showcasing local crafts.
The impressive thing about Meneham is how harmoniously these man-made structures blend into the lush nature. There’s a pleasant order without feeling sterile – a place where one gladly lingers. The hour we spend here flies by, filled with discoveries and the feeling of having found a special place. We take our return journey along the beach, accompanied by the sound of waves and the fresh sea breeze as we make our way back to our starting point.
